ESPRONCEDA – Institute of Art & Culture, the INSTITUT DE CIÈNCIES DEL MAR (ICM-CSIC) in Barcelona, and the INERVO COMPANY are pleased to announce the launch of a new collaboration, taking its first steps from May 2 to May 4, 2024. This will culminate in an interdisciplinary art and science event called LuzLíquida.
The event includes two days of interdisciplinary art and science workshops for a maximum of 20 artists, a day of conferences, and the presentation of the performance Oceanida, which explores marine bioluminescence through sustainable choreography. Contemporary artistic and scientific practices play a fundamental role in raising awareness during this period of eco-social transition.
Beyond pure aesthetics, they can challenge established dominant narratives, question unsustainable practices, and stimulate new connections that foster collaborations contributing to a more equitable and sustainable future. In this context, the collaboration between artistic, scientific, philosophical, and political research can serve as a catalyst for awareness and change, helping us imagine a future where the rights of all living and non-living beings are considered in decision-making processes to safeguard the ecosystems we share.
LuzLíquida is a project developed through the collaboration of these three institutions with the goal of exploring different methodologies and languages related to the themes of the PETRI-MED project (Plankton biodiversity through remote sensing and omics in the Mediterranean Sea).
LuzLíquida will begin with an open interdisciplinary research laboratory for 20 artists from various fields (performing arts, visual arts, sound arts, audiovisual arts, textile arts, etc.) interested in the intersection of art and science. The two-day laboratory will focus on the relationship between biomimicry and three key functions of phytoplankton—carbon sequestration, ocean acidification, and cloud formation—which are crucial for marine ecosystems, connecting these concepts with artistic practices.
This 12-hour laboratory will include discussions with the scientific team from ICM—Vanessa Balagué, Magda Vila, Elisabetta Broglio, and Marco Talone—as well as physical exploration activities coordinated by Carlotta Storelli and Benjamín Slavutzky from the dance and theater company Inervo, and Alessia Gervasone from Espronceda.
The goal is to analyze and define a poetics of relationships that highlights the interdependence between living beings (in this case, humans and plankton) through art and science.
On May 4, 2024, a roundtable discussion will be held with experts from the Institut de Ciències del Mar, participating artists, and representatives from Inervo Company and Espronceda, where the results of the workshop will be publicly presented. The event will conclude with the performance of Oceánida, created by Inervo.
LuzLíquida takes place within the framework of THEATRE IN PALM, a European platform that brings together 12 partners across Europe to collaborate in promoting and supporting emerging artists in the fields of performing and scenic arts. Espronceda, a key partner in this initiative, aims to establish an open, intercultural space for performing arts, facilitating the circulation of artists and the development of innovative projects beyond European borders.
